The 2022 Subaru Ascent

Its turbocharged 2.5L boxer engine is potent and can produce 260 horsepower. It also generates 277 lb-ft of torque using the CVT transmission. A smooth ride, comfortable seats, and great driver-assist features are some of its strong points.

What’s New?
The 2022 model shares many features with its predecessor. As such, one may think there isn’t much to the new model compared to the old one. However, the car still has plenty of goodies for the average car buyer. Subaru added a new trim to the lineup called “the Onyx Edition.” This comes alongside the other trims whose prices remain the same.
Trim Levels
There are 5 different configurations available for the Subaru Ascent. You get to pick either the Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, or Touring version. All the configurations have the same 2.4L Turbo flat 4 gas engine mated to a CVT automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.
Pricing starts at $32,295 for the base trim, $34,795 for the Premium, $37,995 for the Onyx Edition, $39,595 for the Limited, and $45,445 for the Touring.
2022 Subaru Ascent’s Interior
Objectively speaking, there is nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to the 2022 Subaru Ascent’s interior. The car comes with what most three-row seaters have in the market. It’s a combination of ample space and versatility. However, it is not the most attractive in the three-row segment.
Compared to its rivals like the Kia Telluride, the second and third rows need to catch up in matters of space. The car’s build is pretty solid, but many of its rivals still have the upper hand, even in this regard. It’s good to note that not everything is terrible.
There are areas where the 2022 Subaru Ascent excels, like the better storage solutions and the sensitive infotainment system. But talking about it as a whole, the 2022 Subaru is somewhere in the middle—it’s good but not the best.
Space and Seating
As mentioned earlier, the 2022 Ascent is designed to have a lot of space. It can carry up to 8 passengers when all three rows are occupied. The interior’s layout is simple, and most of the space inside is occupied by the first two rows. People sitting in the front row will be the most comfortable. They have plenty of room to move as much as they want.
This is thanks to the 41.3 inches of headroom and 42.2 inches of legroom. Passengers sitting in the second row will also be reasonably comfortable with the 40 inches of headroom and 38.6 inches of legroom. This may only challenge passengers with bigger bodies and broad shoulders.
The situation gets tricky in the third row. Here, passengers get 36.3 inches of headroom, 31.7 inches of legroom, and 57.2 inches of shoulder room. This is enough for young kids and teenagers but insufficient for most adults and tall occupants.
The base trim does not have a 7 seat configuration and is an 8-seater by default. The 7 seat configuration is optional in the Premium and Limited trims but comes as standard in the Onyx Edition and Touring and trims.
THE BEST SEDANS WITH HIGH GROUND CLEARANCE
There are plenty of vehicles on the market that let you tower over obstacles without losing the convenience of a compact car. Therefore, we’ve put together a list of our favorite new sedans with high ground clearance.
Materials and Colors
The 2022 Subaru Ascent’s interior can be configured based on different material selections. The high-end trims have better materials than lower trims. The Base trim comes with the black slate cloth upholstery, which feels robust and can handle messy usage.
The Premium trim offers stain-resistant upholstery and is available in a warm ivory color. The Limited trim also has warm ivory color, but in Touring, the warm ivory is replaced by Java Brown. The latest Onyx Edition has grey Startrex upholstery, which is Subaru’s unique material. Lastly, the Limited and Touring have leather upholstery.
Cargo and Trunk Space
There is serious cargo space competition among mid-sized 3-row SUVs, and Subaru Ascent could be better in the lineup. The trunk behind the 3rd row offers 17.8 cubic feet. If you fold the 60⁄40 rear bench, you can extend this space up to 47.5 cubic feet (in models without a moonroof).
If you fold the second row as well, you can get a maximum space of 86.5 cubic feet which is also not enough when compared to the competition. However, Subaru solved the problem of storage in the Ascent by introducing velcro straps that allow different storage configurations.
Infotainment
The infotainment system inside the 2022 Subaru Ascent is straightforward to use. You can control it using buttons or touch. It also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The interior contains loads of standard features despite the concerns about leather upholstery and heated seats being only reserved for higher trims.
The standard infotainment system includes a 6.5-inch screen, satellite radio, USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, and automatic tri-zone climate control. You can upgrade some features by going for an extra package that offers an 8-inch screen, navigation, a 14 speaker audio system, Wi-Fi hotspot, push-button start, second-row climate controls, and much more.

Is The 2022 Subaru Ascent Worth Buying?
When it comes to three-row SUVs, there’s no doubt that the Ascent is one of the more rugged options. With standard AWD, plenty of ground clearance, and a solid list of safety features, there is plenty of reason that makes the Subaru Ascent a worthy investment. But is it worth buying the 2022 Subaru Ascent for its interior design and utility alone?
The 2022 Ascent offers a spacious and comfortable cabin – at least for the first two rows. Unfortunately, the third row seating is admittedly cramped and is best reserved for smaller occupants like kids. The Ascent’s interior materials are far from luxurious, but they’re nice, comfy, and easy to clean, making the cabin ideal for families with an active lifestyle.
Tech-wise, the 2022 Ascent comes with a small-ish 6.5-inch screen but it does support both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You also get the EyeSight system that includes safety features like lane-keeping assist with lane centering, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Upgrading to a mid-range trim adds blind-spot monitoring and lane-change assist.
The Subaru Ascent is a decent car for large families. Its three-row setup matches up to what other industry leaders provide. The interior is comfortable and offers the space needed for both adults and kids. It’s also a superb performer on the road and offers plenty of what the average American family needs.
