Although American brands like Ford and Chevy dominate the pickup truck segment, many folks still gravitate towards the long-running Toyota Tacoma. It’s no surprise Toyota pickup trucks have a long history of reliability and performance, and the Tacoma is a shining example. However, the Tacoma is notorious for having little to no updates over the years, but that changes soon for its next generation.

As the age of electric vehicles kicks into high gear, Toyota is looking to begin a new chapter for the long-running truck with an electric Tacoma. Due to many years of lacking significant updates, the prospect of a redesigned Toyota Tacoma should excite many people, especially as it takes on the EV pickup truck market.

Today, we highlight everything you need to know about the upcoming electric Tacoma. Here’s everything we know about the redesigned 2024 Toyota Tacoma EV.

What Will the New Electric Tacoma Look Like?

As of this writing, the exterior styling for the upcoming Toyota Tacoma EV has yet to be revealed. However, based on some teasers and news, we have some sensible predictions – but take these with a grain of salt.

Based on company teasers and easter eggs, the new 2024 Tacoma will be redesigned. According to Motor1, a Toyota Tacoma design patent has been filed in Brazil, which indicates a moderate makeover for the Tacoma. One of the most notable takeaways from the patented design is that the new Tacoma has borrowed some styling cues from Toyota Tundra but is smaller.

Looking at the design patent, the headlights and taillights have the same shape as the Tundra but with reduced proportions. As a whole, the design features several body creases, flared wheel arches, and thinner vertical headlights. If it looks familiar, it’s because the design is very similar to the Tacoma EV concept that was teased back in 2021.

However, it’s safe to assume that the electric Tacoma will feature different styling elements than the production model. For instance, Toyota may use a closed-off grille design since a grille would have no practical purpose. The new EV Tacoma may also sport a slightly different wheel design. Based on what we know so far, it looks like Toyota may opt for a less wild design than we came to expect from EVs – but we can expect some design elements signifying the truck’s ruggedness.

What Will the New Interior of the Tacoma EV Look Like?

One of the main complaints about the Tacoma (and Toyota vehicles, in general) is its not-so-great interiors. Furthermore, aside from a few updates, Tacoma’s interior doesn’t stand out, especially compared to the competition. One can argue that it’s the practical side of pickup trucks, but other manufacturers have stepped up long ago.

With that said, Motor1 has procured some spy photos of the purportedly new Tacoma interior, and a few things should excite prospective buyers. The spy photos depict a cloth-covered dashboard but still reveal various vital details like the use of a digital instrument cluster and a newly redesigned steering wheel.

Like the current Tacoma, the spy photos show an infotainment screen sitting on top of the center stack. Interestingly, the screen from the spy shots shows a larger screen than the current model’s 8-inch unit. Another interior design departure is that the shifter is now located on the driver’s side of the console.

With that said, many agree that the new electric Tacoma truck should have at least a refreshed interior with upscale materials and an attractive layout.

What’s Under the Hood of the Tacoma EV?

Unfortunately, Toyota has gone to great lengths to keep its new truck under wraps, so there’s no actual information about technical and mechanical specs – but, of course, that won’t stop people from speculating. Obviously, instead of a gas engine, the new Tacoma EV will likely be powered by one or two electric motors.

If it’s a single-motor variant, the new Tacoma EV may have a rear-wheel drive with 201 horsepower, similar to the single-motor bZ4X. With a dual-motor variant, it will likely have four-wheel drive and deliver a performance of up to 300 horsepower – which is in line with many EVs in the market.

Meanwhile, the current V6 Tacoma has a towing capacity of 6,800 lbs, which should be a good benchmark for the electric variant. In terms of acceleration, it’s reasonable to expect a 0-60 mph of under seven seconds. We also expect the Tacoma EV to ride on the same platform as the production models instead of a new dedicated EV platform.

This approach differs from EV pickup trucks like the Rivian, which was purely developed in an all-electric platform. Lastly, the new electric Tacoma may also have a TRD version for those looking for the most rugged version of the truck.

What’s the Price of the 2023 Toyota Tacoma EV?

One of the top reasons why an all-electric Tacoma is so eagerly anticipated is its potentially more affordable price tag than other major electric pickups. The current 2023 Tacoma starts at $27,750, and it’s one of the least expensive midsize trucks in the market. It’s safe to assume that the Tacoma EV will be higher than that, but it will likely have more competitive pricing.

For instance, the 2023 Rivian R1T has an MSRP of $73,000, while the 2023 F-150 Lightning starts at $55,974. Considering that the Tacoma will be smaller than the F-150 Lightning and Silverado EV, there’s a good chance the Tacoma EV will undercut most major electric pickups in the current market.

With a competitive price tag and a refreshed design, the Tacoma EV has a good fighting chance of dominating the electric pickup segment, despite its smaller size. In fact, its smaller size might be a boon to buyers who prefer a smaller, more practical midsize truck. Considering Toyota’s reputation of reliability, dependability, and brand recognition, the new electric Tacoma is undoubtedly worth looking forward to.

A new redesigned Toyota Tacoma has been a long time coming, and an EV version will take the beloved pickup to new heights.

Toyota Tacoma EV Release Date

It’s still uncertain, but there’s promising evidence that Toyota will launch an all-electric pickup truck soon. Toyota, including Lexus, has committed to introducing at least 15 electric vehicles by 2025, and there’s a good chance that the popular Tacoma will be part of that lineup. Moreover, they’ve made significant progress on several vehicles that were initially previewed as part of their EV concept lineup.

Back in 2021, Toyota expressed intentions to electrify its pickup range “in the near future,” encompassing both hybrid and BEV powertrains. With the hybrid versions of the Tundra and Tacoma already on the roads, an electric truck certainly makes sense – especially, considering the popularity of the truck.

However, a potential roadblock might be Toyota’s current battery technology. Their existing EVs lag behind competitors in terms of range. Many Toyota pickup trucks are known for their heavy-duty capabilities like towing and hauling. Thus, Toyota might wait for advancements in their battery technology.

Overall, many experts predict that the Toyota Tacoma EV will hit the markets no later than 2025.
