Toyota has fully redesigned the Tacoma pickup truck for the 2024 model year. This marks the first complete redesign since the third-generation Tacoma launched in 2015. The new 2024 Tacoma emphasizes enhanced off-road talents, two new powertrain options, including a first-ever hybrid model, updated safety technology and interior comfort, and bolder, more rugged styling.  So, truck fans will want to know the 2024 Toyota Tacoma release date. The answer? Now. Production began at the automaker’s assembly facility in Mexico in December 2023. Examples are already reaching dealer lots.

Here’s what else you need to know about this truck.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Release Date: New Exterior Design

The comprehensive redesign centers around creating an “adventure machine,” in the words of Toyota engineers. While improving the Tacoma’s proven durability and reliability, Toyota also incorporated modern exterior styling cues and off-road accents. It’s a revolutionary, not evolutionary, approach. This “Taco” still looks like a Toyota truck.

Signature elements of the new styling include high-mounted LED headlamps, hexagonal grille accents, integrated roof and tailgate spoilers, and aggressive skid plates conveying ruggedness. To capture this adventurous spirit, Toyota designers drew inspiration from past Tacoma generations and the company’s Baja race trucks.

To improve durability, Toyota utilizes high-strength steel and laser welds throughout the fully redesigned frame and body. The Tacoma also employs aluminum components to reduce weight. Meanwhile, durable composite materials make up the reshaped truck bed.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Release Date: New Powertrains

One major upgrade on the 2024 Tacoma is under the hood, as Toyota offers two all-new powertrain choices. The V6 is dropped.

The base engine option is a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, making 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque in most configurations. It’s paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, with a six-speed manual available with some trims.

The showstopper is the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain on select trims. This system combines the turbo 2.4-liter engine and a potent electric motor (fed by a 1.8-kWh nickel metal hydride battery pack). Total system output equals 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. That torque output nearly doubles what’s offered with the previous generation’s V6. Toyota says the instant electric torque allows the Tacoma i-Force Max to effortlessly climb a 6% grade without downshifting. The eight-speed automatic is the sole transmission with the hybrid setup.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Release Date: Towing and Off-Roading

With its refreshed powertrains, Toyota also upgraded other core truck capabilities of the 2024 Tacoma, like towing and payload. Maximum towing capacity rises to 6,500 pounds on many versions. The payload increases up to 1,710 pounds on i-Force Max hybrid editions.

The Tacoma TRD family gains several upgrades for off-road enthusiasts, making it more capable over rocky terrain. An all-new available front stabilizer bar disconnect system dramatically increases articulation and suspension flex with the simple push of a button.

Approach, departure, and breakover angles have all improved on TRD Off-Road 4x4 configurations. Running ground clearance also rises to 11.5 inches. FOX or Bilstein shocks soak up impacts, while skid plates and rock rails shield vital components from trail damage.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Release Date: Cabin Upgrades

Along with its refreshed exterior and improved truck capabilities, the 2024 Tacoma also ushers in a more refined, tech-laden interior.

An all-new modern dashboard design opens up space and incorporates the latest interior technologies. Most trims are fitted with a new 8-inch multimedia touchscreen, while the Limited trim receives a 14-inch touchscreen display. Both systems support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

In gas models without the hybrid battery pack, Toyota carved out more storage space beneath the rear seat, now offering three times the capacity. The rear seat cushions themselves fold up for more versatile cargo room.

Double Cab models retain the full rear seat for carrying extra passengers. However, Toyota added a new XtraCab configuration focused solely on storage, as it lacks rear doors or a rear bench. Yet lockable storage cubbies integrated into the XtraCab’s rear area make the most of the exclusive two-seater layout.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Release Date: Standard Safety Tech

All 2024 Tacoma trims now come standard with the latest active safety technology. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane centering assist with road edge detection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and road sign recognition. Proactive Driving Assist provides gentle braking and steering inputs to help support the driver with distance control and keeping centered within a lane. It functions at speeds under 50 mph.

The 2024 Tacoma also gains an Emergency Driving Stop System. This new safety feature monitors if the driver is attentive. If the system detects the driver is unresponsive, like during a medical emergency, it will flash alerts. If the driver still does not respond, the Tacoma can automatically slow down and stop safely. This system aims to help keep drivers safe if they cannot actively control the vehicle.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Release Date: Pricing and Availability

The MSRP for the base 2024 Tacoma SR is $31,500, while the top-tier Tacoma Limited starts at $52,100. Toyota hasn’t yet announced pricing for the Trailhunter trim. As is typical with an all-new model, initial availability is spotty and can vary greatly by dealer.
