Although the Ford Raptor has been a phenomenal truck since it was first put on the market back in 2010, it has had its share of little problems and corks. Most vehicles do, especially their first few years in production, but 20 years later, Ford has nailed it. The best year for the Ford Raptor is the 2020 model year.

A stout off-roading machine, yet a very comfortable on-the-road cruiser, you could call this Raptor the supercar of the truck world. Powerful engine options - its ability to handle off-road obstacles like jumps, water, mud, rock/hill-climbing, and more is unbelievable, and from past years, a much more spacious interior for passengers to enjoy.

If there was one complaint that could be brought to Ford’s attention is the interior infotainment technology is starting to get a little dated. But the 2021 Ford Raptor is said to take care of that problem. The ‘21 Raptor hasn’t even been priced yet, but with all of the massive performance updates to keep on pace with Ram’s TRX “Truck Of The Year”, one could imagine it is going to be a pretty hefty price tag.

The 2020 Ford Raptors Competition

For 2020, there isn’t really any truck out there that pushes the envelope as the Raptor does. But there is still the Honda Ridgeline, the GMC Canyon, and the Toyota Tacoma that tries to compete. On the road, the Raptors competitors do pretty well, but their off-road capabilities don’t compare.

Raptor Performance and Gas Mileage

The Raptor is a powerful truck, with a suspension that can handle whatever you throw at it. Starting with the engine, a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 is placed between the fenders of this beast. This is the same engine that is found in the GT Supercar and produces 450 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque. Handling all that power and disturbing it to all four wheels is a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.

The power is just the beginning of the Raptor’s ability. With Fox shocks, a long-travel suspension, 17-inch rims wrapped in some beefy off-road capable tires, a ground clearance of 11.5 inches, and skid plates designed to protect your undercarriage, this is your go anywhere, do anything bad-to-the-bone truck.

Thanks to the Raptors twin-turbos, the off-road truck can get from 0-60 mph in about 5.5 seconds. Undoubtedly, one of the things that makes this truck so impressive is how it doesn’t seem to slow down or lose power despite hitting heavy gravel, rocks and boulders, crossing mass water obstructions, climbing hills, or doing anything else you can think of, it just stays trucking.

You might notice one downfall from Raptor’s performance, gas mileage is a little on the low side with an EPA-estimated 15 city / 18 highway / 16 combined MPG. But, let’s face it, this kind of like buying a sports car, you don’t really buy them expecting the greatest gas mileage in the first place.

2020 Ford Raptor Configurations

The best year for the Ford Raptor comes available with one bed size and two cab configurations. The bed size is a standard 5.5-foot load bed that will be sitting behind either a SuperCab, which is the smaller of the two, or a CrewCab that will come with four doors. Both cabs offer seating for up to five people.

Raptors Towing Ability

Although the Ford Raptor may not boast the same towing abilities as some of Ford’s other trucks, it still puts in some up pretty decent numbers. The SuperCab manages up to 6,000 lbs. of towing capacity with a 1,000 lb. payload, and the CrewCab can tow up to 8,000 lbs. with a towing capacity of 1,200 lbs. payload. If these numbers seem kind of low to you, we recommend you look towards other F-150 versions as you must be looking for a truck with different impressive features and abilities.

Interior Standard and Optional Features

First, this is a no-brainer. If you go with the SuperCab, you will have less space in the back for passengers, although the seats are still comfy. With the CrewCab, your rear passengers of all sizes will have plenty of room to kick back in and relax or enjoy the exciting off-roading.

Standard upholstery is in the fabric category, but leather seats can be ordered up. You can also order Recaro front seats, but either way you go, you will get heated and ventilated front seats and optional heated rear seats.

Dual-zone climate control is mostly a standard for all Ford trucks, along with steering wheel controls, and some carbon fiber styling features depending on the interior trim level you ordered up.

Ford F-150 Raptor Feature and Infotainment Center

One of the nieces feature about the Raptor is the Trail Control. This feature lets people who are less experienced in off-road situations hit a button and let the Raptor assist them over tricky terrain. Other features to help you handle the beast are rear parking sensors, quad-beam LED headlights with auto high beams, a trailer brake controller, cruise control, and start/stop technology.

Your infotainment center comes with an 8-inch touch screen that includes SYNC 3 technology and supports SiriusXM satellite radio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth. The 4H LTE Wi-Wi Hotspots works well, but it is a little slow to respond. Available options are a ten-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system upgrade, a voice-activated navigation system, and dual-zone climate control.

Ford Raptor Standard and Available Saftey Features

First, we’ll start with standard features: Forward Collision with Automatic Braking, Curve Control, rear parking sensors, rearview camera, seatbelt pretensions, SOS post-crash alert system, and a standard suite of airbags. Optional safety features include Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control with stop-and-go, inflatable second-row seatbelts, and a 360-degree camera.

Is 2020 Ford Raptor the Truck For You?

The best year for the Ford Raptor is for anyone who loves four-wheel driving, going to the duns, and taking their off-roading skills to the limit. If you’re looking for a truck that is more suitable to do work tasks, Ford probably has some better options for you. Not that the Raptor can’t handle long, hard workdays, but this truck is more suited for long trips through “The Great Out Doors”.
