Ford Edge Third-Row Seating: What To Know
Ford Edge by Vauxford — CC BY-SA 4.0
The Ford Edge stands out from the crowd of three-row layouts that most modern SUVs come with. The Edge prioritizes a two-row seating layout that’s very comfortable and spacious. So if you’re looking to find out if the Ford Edge currently has third-row seating: it doesn’t, outside of one exception.
Ford did unveil a seven-seat layout at a Go Further event in Guangzhou, China. That change took away from the SUV’s looks since it had to have a longer wheelbase and a new rear end to accommodate the extra seating space. Will that model find its way to the worldwide market? We can’t speculate, but we’re interested nonetheless.
Let’s see if Ford Edge third-row seating can compete with other SUVs that were designed to be seven-seaters from the get-go.
Ford Edge Third-Row Seating
Ford Motor China President John Lawler mentioned that premium SUV customers in China choose more space and comfort, which they aimed to create with the seven-seater Ford Edge.
Besides Ford Edge third-row seating, a few other features were tailored specifically for Chinese customers.
As for the dimensions, there aren’t specific numbers available, but the seven-seater definitely comes with a longer wheelbase. The rear end was also changed, with the tailgate being more upright with the seven-seater.
Other markets are still waiting for a Ford Edge with third-row seating, and although the speculations have died down since Ford first unveiled this SUV, many enthusiasts claimed that a seven-seater Ford Edge would trump the competition, including Ford’s own larger Explorer.

Ford Edge Two-Row Seating
The midsize SUV other markets received is very roomy and comfortable. You can very comfortably fit five people in a vehicle with a modern infotainment system and a great interior finish.
This modern SUV doesn’t look too shabby either, with its unique design and sharp body lines.
The two-row SUV has average cargo space for a vehicle of its category, with 39.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats. With the seats folded, you have 73.4 cubic feet to work with, which is more than enough space to carry multiple bulky items.
Cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats come standard. Options are synthetic or leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated rear seats, heated and cooled front seats, and a heated steering wheel.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the child safety setup of Ford Edge second-highest for ease of use. Ford Edge comes with an abundance of features, which are user-friendly and easy to use. The SUV comes equipped with more or less every modern everyday consumer is likely to think of.
This is a very good midsize two-row SUV that sits beautifully in the middle of Ford’s SUV lineup: bigger than the Escape, smaller than the Explorer.
Seven Seat SUVS Similar to the Ford Edge
Without a doubt, the Ford Edge seven-seater sold in China is an excellent SUV, but importing it just wouldn’t be worth it since you can buy a similar seven-seater and save yourself the trouble. Let’s take a look at similar vehicles to Ford Edge with third-row seating.
Ford Explorer
This is a very famous well-known vehicle manufactured by Ford for the purpose of delivering customers a comfortable seven-seat vehicle. As of late, Ford has invested in the Explorer, making it more powerful, efficient, and comfortable while still maintaining the iconic look of the Explorer. No matter where you are, the Ford Explorer is an excellent crossover SUV with comfortable third-row seating.
Ford Expedition
By reading the name, you should already know why this vehicle was designed and produced. Ford Expedition is the ultimate three-row family SUV that offers great power and broad interior space.
Although this vehicle was designed to seat a large family comfortably, it’s more than capable of handling other tasks, such as towing and overcoming off-road obstacles on an adventure.
The Ford Expedition is a popular family vehicle capable of doing everything you need it to do, whether that’s traveling, off-roading, or towing.

The 2021 Ford Edge
The 2021 Edge is still a two-row SUV, and it’s performance-oriented now more than ever. You’ll still get an abundance of useful features, a sleek body design, and the powerful 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine, but third-row seating for Ford Edge isn’t currently an option.
Ford already has multiple three-row seating SUVs in their lineup, and even though there are customers that have asked and continue to ask for a Ford Edge with third-row seating, it most likely won’t happen. It simply comes down to the fact that such a venture wouldn’t be profitable because customers would simply switch from the Explorer, the Flex, or the Expedition and purchase a Ford Edge instead.
Ford Edge Best and Worst Model Years
Customers claim that the best model is the 2014 Ford Edge. That is because it doesn’t really have any issues, and the same cannot be said for the earlier models. On top of that, the 2014 Ford Edge is a high-tech, cozy vehicle with a great design—there’s nothing really to dislike.
The earlier models or the first generation (2007-2014) Ford Edge have major electrical problems that can occur as early as 66,000 miles. These model years of the Ford Edge are best avoided because they simply aren’t worth the headaches that they might cause you.
The 2018 model year is a good alternative to the 2014 model year. It isn’t as highly praised, but you’re getting a more modern vehicle at a slightly higher price.
The 2018+ model years still have to stand the test of time, especially the 2021 model year.

Should You Purchase a Ford Edge?
The Asian Ford Edge with third-row seating would cost you a hefty amount to purchase and import, so it simply isn’t worth it. However, a 2021 Ford Edge with two-row seating goes for $33,995, which is kind of indicative of what you’re getting. However, for a few thousand bucks more, you could get a Jeep Grand Cherokee L, the beautiful Mazda CX-9, or a Kia Telluride.
The 2021 model year didn’t get anything major, and as for the trim, buying the ST model for $11,000 more probably isn’t worth it.
If there was a Ford Edge with third-row seating in the USA and Europe, the SUV would sell much better—however, Ford already offers two larger three-row SUVs, so if the third seat is a dealbreaker, you’d be better off looking into those options.
