1903: The Dawn of an Icon

The first Ford Motor Company logo was a complex emblem that included the words “Ford Motor Co” and “Detroit Mich” to showcase the brand’s place of origin. The logo was surrounded by an ornate frame of leaves and swirling shapes, with the letters designed to follow a wave of motion, resembling natural handwriting. The color scheme was primarily black, with a white frame and white wording.

1907: Simplification Begins

Back in 1907, the Ford logo got a big makeover. They ditched the fancy border and cursive writing, opting for big, bold letters that spelled out “FORD” in the middle of an oval. They also threw in phrases like “Every car guaranteed twelve months” and “for quality, hallmark, and economy” to show that they’re all about trust and quality. And instead of just black and white, they added shades of gray to the mix.

It’s a relatively simple logo with several imperfections. This logo shows Ford means business, but it is still grounded and relatable for consumers.

In 1909, the Ford logo really started to look like the one we recognize today. They rolled out a new design that had “Ford” written in a style that mimicked the handwriting of Henry Ford himself, complete with a fancy, stretched-out “D” that kind of looks like the “Coca Cola” logo. Atop this oval border, the phrase “The Famous” was etched, and at the bottom, “Motor Cars” was inscribed, both in a classic serif typeface.

1912: A Brief Departure

In 1912, Ford unveiled a new logo design, replacing the oval badge with a shape resembling a bird or wings perched atop a triangle. Designers chose blue and white for the bird, and the company adopted “The Universal Car” as its new tagline.

This marked the most significant departure from the classic oval logo, apart from the original 1903 design. Interestingly enough, this was the first time Ford used the blue and white combination of colors which became a staple design element later on.

1917: Return to the Oval

In 1917, Ford returned to the oval shape for its logo, with shades of gray and black, and a much lighter font for the “Ford” typograph. The gray oval emblem came with a thin black border, adding a touch of sophistication and elegance. This also marks the last time that company used a non-blue oval logo throughout the long Ford Logo history.

1957-1976: Experimentation without Major Changes

During these two decades in the Ford logo history, the company played around with different looks, like how thick or slanted the letters were and what kind of borders to put around the logo. But even with all these little tweaks, they didn’t make any really big changes to the logo during that time.

1976: The Three-Dimensional Ford Badge

In this year, Ford introduced their three-dimensional emblem that is now widely recognized. The typography and border of the emblem were altered to a silver color, while the blue background was given gradients to produce a tactile effect that resembles a vehicle badge.

2003: Simplification and Refinement

In 2003, Ford released a simplified version of the logo, removing the 3D gradients and shading. This version is very similar to the one from 1961 but with slightly different dimensions and more refined contours of the inscription. This is the logo that most people know and love, and is a worthy emblem for some of the most popular vehicles sold in America, including the Ford F-Series and Ford Explorer.
