A little smaller than a lot of SUVs, but with the advantage of a higher body plan and more cargo room than most of its size competitors, the CR-V does a lot of things right. But when it comes to dimensions, size is only part of the equation.

CR-Vs are known for being a good commuter vehicle that’s relatively fuel-efficient, offers plenty of internal space for comfort and cargo, and is still maneuverable and up to the challenges of going camping or tackling difficult mountain roads.

The Honda CR-V’s external dimensions are: 182″ Length x 73″ Width x 66-67″ Height. Translating that a little, that’s just over 15 feet long, about 6 feet wide, and 5 and a half feet tall.
That might sound a little shorter than average for an SUV, but the CR-V compensates by having relatively low-lying seats so you can get a little more headroom.
Of course, short only applies when you’re talking about SUVs since the modern CR-V is still significantly taller than your average car or sedan.
The CR-V also has between 7.8 and 8.2 inches of ground clearance. That’s pretty good clearance and helps keep your vehicle handle wash boarded dirt roads, rocks, and other road debris. However, it’s still a bit lower than older models of CR-V and much lower than trucks and other all-terrain vehicles.
All of that reflects that the most recent models of CR-V are designed more for commuters than as a travel vehicle or an outdoorsman’s vehicle.
That’s not a bad thing, but it is a bit of a shift from older CR-Vs that were more designed for people who wanted an adventure vehicle that was still practical.

First, let’s look at the cargo room. There’s a total of 74 cubic feet of space, including the seating area. However, the cargo area on its own accounts for 37-39 cubic feet of space.
For comparison, the larger Pilot has more total cargo area but only half the dedicated cargo space of the Honda CR-V. The CR-V is definitely one of the best SUVs in terms of cargo space, and it’s designed for people who want to haul a reasonable amount of cargo.
But, that also comes at the cost of not having an expanded seating area, unlike some SUVs. The CR-V is only designed to have 4-5 passengers, with two rows of seating.
Now that we’ve talked a bit about the cargo space let’s take a closer look at some of the interior dimensions that help keep you comfortable in your vehicle.
CR-V Comfort Dimensions
The comfort dimensions of your vehicle are the dimensions that help make sure you’re comfortable inside the vehicle. For instance, headroom is especially important for tall people since having more headroom can prevent them from having to hunch in the seat and can give you a little room to avoid bumps and bruises going over speed bumps or washboards.
Both the front and rear seating rows have about 40 inches of headroom, with slightly less in the back row. That means that CR-Vs are usually pretty tall-friendly and can make the vehicle more comfortable even for shorter drivers.

The CR-V is a model that’s changed in character quite a bit over the last decade or so. From another manufacturer, that might have led to a confusing design that grabbed a couple of important features for different groups but without a cohesive design.
Thankfully, the most recent models seem to have avoided that fate. The CR-V might be a little lower in profile than earlier models, but that reflects a shift in focus. This version is more of a commuter or road-tripping vehicle and only slightly less of a camping or adventure vehicle.
More cargo space and carrying capacity also make the CR-V a great option for bulk shoppers and other people who need to haul a fair amount of cargo but don’t need a dedicated truck.
