For over two decades now, the Toyota Prius has set the standard for cars that are easy on the Earth and on your wallet. Since making its way stateside at the turn of the millennium, the reliable hybrid has been through a few redesigns, with the biggest one coming most recently in 2015.

Toyota increased the cargo space and opted for more aggressive styling with a fiercer front end and a futuristic backside. This aesthetic was refined for the 2019 model year, giving consumers arguably the best-looking and best driving Prius yet, with a clean design that has been kept for the 2020 and 2021 Toyota Prius models.

The 2019 model year also saw the introduction of all-wheel-drive options on some trims. If you’re looking to save the Earth and your bank account, then the Toyota Prius is the perfect car for you, and buying used is the way to go.

A Prius can save you money on gas while releasing less greenhouse gases every mile compared to your average car. Buying a pre-owned car can save you thousands in car payments, while also avoiding the carbon footprint of a whole new car. Whichever factor is more important to you, CoPilot will help you find your pre-owned 2019 Toyota Prius and make sure you’re getting the best possible deal.

How much does the average used 2019 Toyota Prius cost?

Certified Pre-Owned: $22,267

Savings vs. new: $8,079

Buying a certified pre-owned 2019 Toyota Prius is a great choice, and on average should save you $8,079 over a new 2021 Toyota Prius. That comes out to a 27% discount. For three quarters of the price of a new Prius, you can get a car with many of the same features and the same design with all the benefits of Toyota’s CPO program.

Uncertified: $20,819

Savings vs. new: $9,538

If you’re looking for even bigger savings, the average pre-owned 2019 Prius outside of Toyota’s CPO program costs $20,819. That’s a savings of $9,538 over a new model, and $1,448 over a certified pre-owned 2019 Toyota Prius. It’s up to you to decide whether the savings outweigh the benefits of buying a certified pre-owned car.

What’s the average mileage for a used 2019 Toyota Prius?

(Fun fact: The plural of Prius is Prii.)

Average Certified Pre-Owned Mileage: 20,278

Average Uncertified Mileage: 23,603

WHY BUY USED?

A new car loses value the second you drive it off the lot. Luckily, many used models sport the same great features as their new counterparts. Here’s where you can find nearly-new cars at significant discounts off MSRP.

What factors affect used prices the most?

Certified/Non-certified status

Toyota offers solid warranties through their certified pre-owned program, that you might not get from private sellers or dealerships. After going through Toyota’s 160-point inspection, a certified pre-owned Prius comes with Toyota’s 1-year/12,000 mile comprehensive warranty, a 7-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty, and an 8-year/100,000 mile warranty on the hybrid-specific parts.

The powertrain warranty also includes reimbursement for a car rental during repairs and travel reimbursement if those repairs are needed more than 150 miles from home. If you buy a used Prius that is not a part of Toyota’s certified pre-owned program, you will be relying on the seller’s word and your own observations that the car is in good condition.

While you won’t get the warranties included in the CPO program, you will still retain the remainder of the car’s original 3-year/36,000 mile basic warranty, the 5-year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty, and the hybrid’s battery system may be covered according to federal or state emission control programs. CoPilot search makes it clear whether or not the used car you are looking at is a certified pre-owned Toyota Prius or not.

Trim levels & features

The 2019 Toyota Prius comes in four trims, the L Eco, LE, XLE, and Limited.

2019 Toyota Prius L Eco

Even at its base trim, the Toyota Prius comes fairly well equipped with safety and convenience features. Inside, you’ll find a 6.1-inch touch display with Toyota’s Entune technology, allowing you to listen to the radio, your CD collection, or any media from your phone via bluetooth or aux cord.

All trims include a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a 6040 split fold down rear seat, automatic bi-LED headlights, power windows and locks, and keyless entry and start. The Prius comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense P package, which includes lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and pre-collision vehicle and pedestrian detection. An average Prius in the L Eco trim should cost around $19,500.

2019 Toyota Prius LE

The LE trim adds to the standard Prius features a blind spot monitor, cross traffic alert, and automatic parking to make your ride safer and easier. The 2019 Toyota Prius also introduced an optional electronic all-wheel drive system available on the LE trim. This trim will typically cost about $20,500, or about $1,000 more than the L Eco trim.

2019 Toyota Prius XLE

If the LE trim was about adding safety and functionality to the Prius, the XLE trim was about adding luxury. The cloth upholstery is upgraded to SofTex synthetic leather, the seats and steering wheel are heated, and a power adjustable driver’s seat is available.

The 6.1-inch screen is replaced with a 7-inch screen, the standard audio package is upgraded to a 6 speaker Entune Audio Premium system, and wireless phone charging is included. This trim also adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, rain-sensing wipers, and fog lights.

The electronic all-wheel drive is also available on the 2019 Prius XLE trim. Even with these premium features, the average price for this trim is about $24,500.

2019 Toyota Prius Limited

The Limited Trim of the 2019 Toyota Prius upgrades the infotainment system yet again with an 11-inch touch screen with built-in navigation as well as HD and satellite radio. An improved JBL 10-speaker audio system is also available.

The navigation system might be an important upgrade since Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are unavailable on the 2019 Prius at any trim level. All features from the lower trims are featured on the Limited trim except for the option of all-wheel drive. An average 2019 Prius Limited should cost around $26,000.

 Mileage

From our CoPilot data, we can see that the average certified pre-owned 2019 Toyota Prius depreciates by about $2 every 5 miles it has been driven. At this rate, for every 10,000 miles you should expect to pay about $3,984 below MSRP on a CPO Toyota Prius compared to a new 2021 Prius.

If you’re buying a non-certified pre-owned, you should expect to save $4,041 for every 10,000 miles. With savings like that, you should be able to find a fair price on a used Prius even without too many miles on it. That can be especially useful if you’re buying outside the CPO program so you can keep as much of the original warranty as possible. But if you do want to buy a CPO, it means you can look for even better value on a car with more miles on the odometer.
