After ten years of its previous design, Toyota released the third generation Tacoma for the 2016 model year with more aggressive styling, an enhanced frame, and improved engine options. This gives it better fuel efficiency, towing, and off-road capabilities than the 2015 model, and puts it about on par with the 2021 Toyota Tacoma.

If you want a capable, stylish pickup truck but don’t need a full-sized behemoth, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma is one of the best compact pickups on the market. With CoPilot Search, you’ll be able to find the right Tacoma for you and make sure you’re paying the right price for it.

How much does the average used 2016 Toyota Tacoma cost?

Certified Pre-Owned: $30,110

Savings vs. new: $8602

You can expect to save yourself about 22% off the average MSRP of a 2021 Toyota Tacoma when you buy a certified pre-owned 2016 model. These savings are pretty significant for a car that has changed very little in the last five years and comes with a good suite of warranty protections.

Uncertified: $29,521

Savings vs. new: $9,191

You can expect to save even more money by purchasing an uncertified pre-owned 2016 Toyota Tacoma, with an average savings of about 24% off MSRP of a new model.

What’s the average mileage for used 2016 Toyota Tacomas?

Average Certified Pre-Owned Mileage: 50,853

Average Uncertified Mileage: 64,270

What factors affect used prices the most?

Certified/Non-certified status

Toyota offers solid warranties through their certified pre-owned program that you might not get from private sellers or dealerships. After going through Toyota’s 160-point inspection, a certified pre-owned Tacoma comes with Toyota’s 1-year/12,000-mile comprehensive warranty, and a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The powertrain warranty also includes reimbursement for a car rental during repairs and travel reimbursement if those repairs are needed more than 150 miles from home. If you can find one, a CPO 2016 Toyota Tacoma might be well worth the average price difference of about $600 for such a good warranty.

Trim levels & features

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma comes in five trims, the SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off Road, and Limited.

2016 Toyota Tacoma SR

All trim levels (except for the Limited trim) of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma are available with two engine options: a 2.7L 4-cylinder with 159hp or a 3.5L V6 with 278hp. They also come in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

The SR comes with many expected features, such as power windows, locks, and mirrors, a bedliner, air conditioning, a sliding rear window, and a tilt-and-telescoping wheel.

The 6.1 inch touchscreen allows you to view the backup camera and control media from the CD player, radio, or your phone, which you can connect via USB, aux, or Bluetooth. Media controls on the steering wheel even allow you to control your phone safely with Siri integration. For this basic model, you can expect to pay around $24,000 for the rear-wheel drive model or $28,000 for the four-wheel drive.

2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5

The SR5 trim adds keyless entry, cruise control, chrome accents, rear window privacy glass, fog lights, and intermittent variable windshield wipers. Inside, the steering wheel is wrapped in leather, satellite radio is added, and so is Scout GPS Link navigation, which requires a smartphone to operate.

Available options include an upgraded 7-inch touchscreen with Toyota’s Entune App suite and an integrated navigation system with no need for your phone. With these upgrades, you can expect to pay about $28,000 for the rear-wheel drive version, or about $31,000 for a four-wheel drive.

2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport

The TRD Sport trim upgrades to 17-inch alloy wheels on a sport-tuned suspension and adds some unique design elements on the outside of the truck, including a scoop in the hood for increased air intake to the engine.

Inside, the gear shifter is now wrapped in leather, and the premium cloth seats receive a more aggressive look. In addition to the upgraded infotainment system, this trim sports a wireless phone charger inside, a 120-volt outlet in the flatbed, keyless entry, and remote start.

Available options include automatic headlights, a sunroof, heated seats, parking sensors and blindspot monitoring, and even an upgraded JBL audio system. If a sportier Tacoma is what you want, you can expect to pay around $32,000 for this trim in rear-wheel drive, or $34,000 for four-wheel drive.

2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road

Most options on the TRD Off Road are the same as the TRD Sport, but its alloy wheels are 16 inches in diameter, its Bilstein suspension system is geared for off-road performance, and its chin spoiler is raised to improve ground clearance.

The TRD Off Road also comes with an electronically locking rear differential and Toyota’s Crawl Control, which helps you maintain consistent acceleration at low speeds to get over rough, steep terrain. Pricing on 2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road trucks are about the same as their TRD Sport counterparts.

2016 Toyota Tacoma Limited

The Limited trim features exclusive 18-inch wheels, premium leather upholstery, and all of the optional features available on the two TRD trims. It is only available with the V6 engine, so with this trim you are paying for both luxury and performance. But you can still be assured that you are getting a good value, as the average price for a 2016 Tacoma Limited is about $35,000, still well below the average price of a brand new Tacoma.

Mileage

From our CoPilot data, we can see that the average certified pre-owned 2016 Toyota Tacoma depreciates by about $1 every 7 miles it has been driven.

At this rate, for every 10,000 miles you should expect to pay about $1,692 below MSRP on a CPO 2016 Toyota Tacoma compared to a new 2021 model.

If you’re buying a non-certified pre-owned, you should expect to save $1,420 for every 10,000 miles.
