Many people will agree that the future of automotive is now. We’re talking about electric vehicles (EVs) and the growing number of car manufacturers that are introducing new and innovative EV models to the market. This surge in EV options provides consumers like you with a diverse range of vehicles to choose from, catering to different preferences and needs. Slowly and surely, EVs have become more mainstream and have come a long way from being a high-tech (and expensive) niche.

One of the most promising EV models as of late is undoubtedly the Kia EV9. The 2024 Kia EV9 is an upcoming three-row electric SUV that combines the best features of the super-popular Telluride with the underpinnings of the hit EV6 crossover. It is expected to hit the US market later this year, at a time when EV adoption continues to grow, and American buyers are showing a strong preference for SUVs. It’s a no-brainer that the EV9 is a highly anticipated EV model.

If you’re eagerly waiting for this three-row all-electric SUV, one of your many concerns might be the Kia EV9 range. In that case, we’re here to answer your burning questions. Today, we highlight the range of the upcoming Kia EV9 and everything else you need to know.

Kia EV9 Range

According to initial reports and press releases, the Kia EV9 targets a max driving range of about 300 miles for its farthest roaming configurations. While the EPA has yet to weigh in on the range capabilities of the Kia EV9, several reputable auto blogs, such as MotorTrend and Car and Driver, have tested the three-row electric SUV and shared their findings.

EV9 Range As Tested by Experts

According to MotorTrend, the Kia EV9 has managed to surpass their expectations in terms of range. The 2024 Kia EV9 is available in five different trims, each offering different ranges based on their battery configurations:

  • The Light RWD trim, equipped with a 76.1 kWh battery, provides a range of 230 miles.
  • The Light Long Range RWD trim, featuring a 99.8 kWh battery, boasts an impressive range of 304 miles (max range for the EV9).
  • Both the Wind e-AWD and Land e-AWD trims, also with 99.8 kWh batteries, offer a range of 280 miles.
  • The range-topping GT-Line e-AWD trim, with its 99.8 kWh battery, has a range of 270 miles.

Based on MotorTrend’s findings, the Light Long Range RWD trim is the optimal choice if you want the highest range, as it offers 304 miles on a full charge. However, the website also stated that while the EV9 Long Range’s 304 miles is commendable, it slightly falls short when compared to the EV6 Long Range RWD’s 310 miles and other full-size SUV rivals such as the Cadillac Lyriq and Rivian R1S. They also expressed disappointment that the base Light RWD trim’s range of 230 miles was somewhat disappointing, as it did not meet the anticipated 260 miles.

On the other hand, Car and Driver also tested the Kia EV9 range and posted their results, and the highlights are:

  • Car and Driver conducted a real-world range test on the GT-Line version of the EV9, achieving a range of 240 miles while driving at 75 mph. This result represents 88% of its EPA-estimated range of 270 miles.
  • This real-world range is quite competitive compared to other electric SUVs tested by the auto blog. For instance, the Rivian R1S and Cadillac Lyriq both achieved only 72% of their EPA estimates, while the Nissan Ariya reached 82%.
  • They also added the EV9’s performance in the real-world range test is particularly noteworthy given its large, boxy shape – not exactly the most aerodynamic design.
  • Like with MotorTrend’s findings, the rear-wheel-drive Light model with the larger battery pack is the ideal choice for range buyers, as it is EPA-rated to deliver a range of 304 miles.

As you can see, both range tests seem to be consistent and have similar numbers. Before we see an official rating from the EPA, it’s safe to say the EV9 will have a range between 230 and 304 miles.

Kia EV9 Range vs. Competitors

How does the Kia EV9 stack up against its main competitors in terms of range and price ratio? We made a quick breakdown below:

2024 Kia EV9 vs Rivian R1S

The Kia EV9 can go up to 304 miles on a single charge, whereas the Rivian R1S has a slightly higher range of up to 400 miles. However, the Kia EV9 is much more affordable, with a starting price of $54,900, compared to the Rivian R1S’s starting price of $79,800. This makes the Kia EV9 a more cost-effective option for those who want a balance between range and affordability.

2024 Kia EV9 vs 2023 Cadillac Lyriq

The Kia EV9 and the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq have similar range capabilities, with the EV9 offering up to 304 miles and the Lyriq up to 312 miles. However, the Kia EV9 is more affordable, with a starting price of $54,900, compared to the Lyriq’s MSRP of $61,795. As a result, the Kia EV9 has a better price-to-range ratio, making it a more appealing option for budget-conscious consumers.

2024 Kia EV9 vs Tesla Model X

Regarding the range, the Tesla Model X performs better than the Kia EV9, providing up to 348 miles compared to the EV9’s 304 miles. However, the Model X’s superior range comes at a higher price point, with a starting price of $79,990, significantly more expensive than the EV9’s starting price of $54,900. As such, the Kia EV9 is a more affordable alternative for those seeking a long-range electric vehicle without the premium price tag.
