With the rising gas prices, consumers are scrambling for ways to save at the pump. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gasoline and diesel prices are projected to fall in 2022 and 2023 as demand decreases. While that sounds encouraging, the skyrocketing prices don’t indicate that the drop will happen anytime soon.
One of the best ways to help you save on fuel prices is through your favorite supermarket chains. If you’re a regular shopper at places like Fred Meyer, QFC, or other Kroger supermarket companies, you should look into their gas rewards program.
For today’s post, we’ll take a look at Kroger gas prices. How much does it cost nowadays? Are prices better than traditional gas companies? How do you save on Kroger gas prices? We’ll answer these questions and more.

How Much Does Kroger Gas Cost?
UPDATE (6/8/2023): According to AAA, the national average per-gallon price of fuel is $3.564 as of June 2023. Prices have been rising and falling for the past few months, so it’s relatively stable overall.
Unlike wholesale chains like Costco, everyone is welcome to pump gas at Kroger-owned gas stations, including Fred Meyer, QFC, Dillons, City Market, and more. In terms of gas prices, Kroger pumps are relatively in-line with other companies, with some locations that can compete with the lowest prices.
As usual, Kroger gas prices can vary from one location to the next. With that said, we’re going to look at a few examples of Kroger prices and how they compare with competitors.
In Houston, TX, Kroger has a per-gallon price of $3.09, which isn’t exactly the cheapest and comparable with Chevron ($3.09) and Shell ($3.05). As per GasBuddy, Kroger doesn’t even belong with the most affordable gas prices in Texas; the honor goes to United Express and 76 – both with prices below $2.70 per gallon.
In Bellingham, WA, Kroger has broken into the top 10 cheapest gas prices in the area through its Fred Meyer store. At $3.65 per gallon, the Fred Meyer gas station competes with Arco, Costco, and Safeway at $3.45 per gallon. However, when you look at the entire state of Washington, not a single Kroger store broke into the top ten, which is dominated by Costco branches.
In West Virginia, Kroger was also able to break into the top ten cheapest prices at $3.09 per gallon. The only more affordable options are Circle K at $3.01 per gallon and Walmart at $3.07 per gallon.
Overall, Kroger doesn’t exactly offer the cheapest gas prices in all its locations, but they are reasonably competitive. However, these prices are only accurate if you’re not taking advantage of Kroger’s Fuel Program.

How to Save on Kroger Gas Prices with Fuel Program
The key to saving on Kroger gas prices is to sign up for the Kroger Plus Card and participate in its fuel program.
To get a Kroger Plus Shopper’s Card, you may go to your local store, approach the customer’s desk, and they’ll get you sorted out. Alternatively, you may create an account at Kroger’s website or download the Kroger app to set up your plus card. Also, you may link your phone number to your account, so you only have to enter your number when shopping to activate the rewards.
The main draw of Kroger’s fuel program is that it allows you to save 10¢ per gallon on Kroger gas stations and participating Shell locations.
The basic idea is to receive one (1) fuel point for every $1 you spend on Kroger stores. Once you accumulate 100 fuel points, you’re entitled to a 10¢ per gallon savings at Kroger and Shell pumps. If you manage to rack up 1,000 points, you may save up to $1 per gallon in a single fill-up.
For each increment of 100 points, another 10¢ per gallon saving will be awarded, which you’re free to use to increase your savings.
To illustrate:
- 100 points = 10¢ off per gallon for one fill up
- 200 points = 20¢ off per gallon for one fill up
- 1,000 points = $1 off per gallon for one fill up
Keep in mind that you may only redeem up to 100 points or 10¢ off at a time if you’re filling up at a Shell station.
How to Earn Kroger Fuel Points
There are three primary ways to earn fuel points, and you can earn them any way you shop – whether in-store, delivery, or online.
- Buying groceries - Earn 1 fuel point for every dollar spent on Kroger groceries and its family of companies. Some items like alcohol, tobacco, and postage stamps are excluded from earning points depending on state regulations. Keep an eye out for promotions that allow you to get more points.
- Prescription drugs - Non-federally funded prescriptions will earn you 25 points and 1 fuel point for every out-of-pocket dollar you spend.
- Gift cards - These cards allow you to earn twice as many points. You earn 2 fuel points for every dollar spent on gift cards. However, not all gift cards are eligible for points.
The fuel points are redeemable from all Kroger Family of Stores Fuel Centers and participating Shell locations. Redeeming is as easy as scanning your Plus card or entering your alt ID, and following the on-screen prompts.

- No limit to the points you can earn each month, but they will expire after one month if not redeemed. Monthly balances don’t combine across months.

- Break poor driving habits: Frantic acceleration and stops will hurt your fuel efficiency by 10% to 40%. Avoid stopping and accelerating abruptly, and be more mindful of your driving habits to improve your overall fuel efficiency.
- Take fewer trips: It might not seem much, but frequent trips to the grocery store to buy a gallon of milk negatively affect your fuel economy. If you can help it, make every trip count and accomplish as many tasks and errands in the fewest trips possible.
- Stick to your vehicle’s maintenance: A well-maintained car is more fuel-efficient. Make sure you’re always up to date with your routine services because they help improve fuel efficiency.
- Keep track of prices: Your preferred gas station may be convenient, but it’s likely not the lowest price in your area. Use apps like GasBuddy to find the cheapest local gas prices.
Are Gas Prices Rising Again? [UPDATE 6/8/2023]
In recent months, consumers have been experiencing fluctuating gas prices that have been a source of frustration. Currently, the national average price for fuel is $3.564 per gallon, as per AAA, slightly lower than the price of $3.574 per gallon from last week.
As the weather gets sunnier and summer approaches, experts predict that more people will start using their vehicles, which will likely increase gas prices. Additionally, fuel companies are switching to summer blends of gasoline, which usually leads to a price increase.
There is cause for concern over the recent announcement that Saudi Arabia will reduce its oil supply. This may result in higher gas prices for US drivers. The cut of 1 million barrels per day, commencing in July, is expected to cause short-term price increases. However, the situation could change if Saudi Arabia extends the reduction.
