Avoiding the first year of any all-new vehicle is something most mechanics and car experts will advise. New designs are often accompanied by bugs that get corrected in later years. We see no reason to avoid the same recommendation for the 2001 Rio, especially because many engine- and transmission-related complaints are on file with NHTSA.

While the overall number of owner complaints dropped for the 2002 Rio, there’s still a strong presence of reports covering the engine and transmission. This is worrisome, especially because these vehicles have two decades of use, making them ripe for age-related problems.

Reports covering the powertrain are down substantially for the 2003 Kia Rio, making this model year a contender in the reliability department. That’s not a ringing endorsement (these are twenty-year-old cars), but a reasonable choice for those with small budgets.
